The Niche I Never Chose : How Clinical Research Found Me
How one message reshaped my business and revealed the niche I was already built for.
Launching my virtual assistant business came with a wave of advice, and the loudest message was always the same: “You need to pick a niche.” At the time, I genuinely didn’t know what that niche was supposed to be. I knew my strengths—clear communication, strong organisation, logical thinking, problem solving under pressure, and a meticulous eye for detail—but those skills apply across so many industries that choosing just one felt impossible. What I didn’t realise then was that a clinical research niche story was already unfolding in the background.
So I ignored the niche rule and focused on finding clients who valued how I work.
The LinkedIn Message That Changed Everything
When I announced my business on LinkedIn in 2021, something unexpected happened. Within days, I received a message from someone I’d indirectly worked with during my time at Quintiles (now IQVIA). She was looking for a part‑time Clinical Trial Administrator for the biotech company she’d joined. And just like that, my “niche” found me.
Stepping Back Into Clinical Research – Without Planning To

That first project opened the door to a world I already knew well but had never considered serving independently. Without planning it, I had stepped straight back into the industry where my skills had always been most valuable. The work felt natural, the expectations familiar, and the impact immediate. My “generalist” strengths—organisation, communication, problem‑solving, and calm under pressure—were exactly what busy clinical teams needed.
My Clinical Research Niche Story
Over time, the pattern became clear:
- The clients who sought me out were all in life sciences.
- The projects I enjoyed most were in clinical research.
- The work where I delivered the most value was supporting teams navigating complex studies, tight timelines, and constant change.
That’s when it clicked: I didn’t need to choose a niche. My niche had already chosen me — a clinical research niche story that had been unfolding long before I realised it.
Where My Skills Deliver The Most Impact
As the workload grew, the consistency was undeniable. The skills I’d honed over years weren’t just transferable – they were in demand:
- Sponsor oversight set-up – creating structure, clarity and accountability from day one
- Meeting minutes – accurate, actionable, and delivered quickly
- Complex travel arrangements – multi-leg itineraries, shifting timelines, and last minute changes
- e-TMF QC – ensuring documentation is inspection ready, complete, and compliant
- Reporting and tracking – keeping teams aligned with real-time visibility
- Newsletter creation – clear, engaging updates that keep stakeholders informed
- Document formatting – polished, consistent materials that reflect professionalism
I Didn’t Choose Clinical Research – It Chose Me
Through the people who remembered how I worked, the teams who trusted me with their studies, and the projects where the strengths made the biggest impact, my niche revealed itself. What started as one message became the catalyst for everything that followed.
